We've moved on to the USA and Canada now - click here to go there
Thursday 15th March 2001

Since leaving La Paz in the south, we went to stay at a surf camp in a little village called Pescadero.
Click here to go there! The camp is run by 2 American's and provides Palapa huts to camp in, which we did by borrowing one of their tents, and their cooking equipment! or you could stay in a Cabana (which was out of our budget!) We stayed their for 3 days during which we spent most of the time on the beach or in the water, learning to surf and actually drinking most of the Pacific (oh how I miss my canoe!). It was a great laugh and we also had "all you can eat pizza" and beer at the owners restaurant!

Leaving the surf camp we got the bus to Ciudad Constitution in order to get another bus to a whale watching site, but it was too difficult to arrange so we continued to Loreto. Here we went Kayaking around an Island in the Marine Reserve which was amazing. On the boat to the island we saw some Grey whales and then whilst kayaking we saw, Sea Lions and loads and loads of Dolphins we managed to paddle pretty close to them and could hear their squeaks and whistles! After paddling for 4 hours (I'd got my fix by then!) we had lunch on a lovely beach then a boat ride back to the mainland! Cool day. But there's more!!

The next day we went whale watching (at the place we tried to get to before!!) and spent 4 hours following scores of Whales, Mum's with calves and bigger groups. They came really close to the boat - one calf actually hit the boat! It was incredible, really big creatures, really tiny boat!!

We then continued north to Mulegé and went on a hike to see some cave paintings that are from 1000 to 5000 years old!
Finally we are now in Ensenada which is only 90mins drive from San Diego after a 14 hour bus trip and several military checks! (more pretend sleeping!) We will probably stay here for a few days then go to Tijuana and then San Diego!

We got the ferry overnight to La Paz which is where we are now.

Tomorrow we are going to Todos Santos to do some surfing.
These are a few images of the area

Saturday 3rd March 2001

Well we're finally back to civilisation! (well a decent Internet connection anyway!) Last week we spent the whole week in Zacatecas just relaxing and not doing much! We went out quite a few times to bars that stay open until 3am! and went to a club 1000 feet underground down an old silver mine - really cool venue - shame about the music - reminded us of old school discos!

Last Sunday we went to Jerez as they had a carnival and then ran about 8 bulls around the main square with a few volunteers in the the square with them, chasing them and being chased! We watched on tiered seat behind a fence although the weight of the crowd pushed the fence down a couple of times which was a bit hairy! One bloke was really teasing a tired bull and it suddenly got up and trampled him which was great.

We also went to a cantina for a drink although they don`t normally let women in! One Mexican lady we were with had never been in a cantina in her entire life until yesterday! In the afternoon we went to the Plaza de Toros to watch a bull fight although all the Europeans and Canadians had reservations. We glad we went but it was pretty gory. We saw 4 bulls killed and a couple of the matadors got a few knocks from the bull.If they did well the matadors win either 1 ear, 2 ears, or 2 ears and the tail of the bull. Mmm, what great prizes!! They threw the ears to the ladies in the crowd - unfortunately Vic didn't get one, maybe next time. Actually I don`t think there will be a next time!

The bus journey from Zacatecas to Chihuahua was interesting to say the least! We were stopped by a traffic cop and boarded and asked for our passports, but they were in the hold, and that was the end of it this time. Next, at a police checkpoint we were asked again - same answer, this time he took the passport of a Canadian girl we were travelling with and asked us to get off the bus and get ours. As we went to get off, some other cops said there was no problem as we weren't American! There was a tense moment until Danie got her passport back! For the next 3 checks we all pretended to be asleep!

The Copper Canyon was cool but the weather turned bad. We went on a hike down into the canyon and sat in a natural hot spring with a hot waterfall for over an hour and then hiked back up again. When we got back in the car it started sleeting and then snowing heavily!

The next day we got back on the train to go down to Los Mochis and it snowed for hours along the way. We got off for a spectacular view of the canyons but it was freezing and snowing so we quickly ran back on the train! This is not what we came to Mexico for!

The train seemed to take for ever. We got a hotel here at Los Mochis at 1.00am this morning and had a good nights sleep. Awoke to bright sunshine and warmth. We're off to the beach this afternoon where apparently you can see dolphins swimming in the bay.
Then we'll catch the overnight ferry across to La Paz on Baja.

Thursday 22nd February 2001

We are still in Zacatecas and will be until after the weekend -
(we were only going to stay here for one night!)
The Cactus Bar has a 2 for 1 night tonight - 80p for 2 bottles of beer!

Monday 19th February 2001
We´re now in Zacatecas - a really beautiful town about 8 hours from Mexico City. The city was cool to visit but busy and noisy and we´re glad to get out and get some peace and quiet for a few days before we´re on the move again.

We are staying in a really nice hostal - Hostal Villa Colonial.

Whilst in the City we went to the Zoo and some Museums, as well as Teothuacan an Indian city with two temples, including one which we climbed in the midday sun, that is twice as big as Chichen Itza.

We also went to a town that is built on artifical islands on a lake which was really nice. There´s a rodeo and running of the bulls in Jerez this weekend so we might go there.

Wednesday 14th February 2001
We have just spent the last week on the coast at Puerto Escondido. It is one of the best surf beaches in the world. We did some cool body surfing and stayed in a shack on the beach, cool or what! Unfortunately we ate some dodgy fish and we both have been really ill for the past few days!

Then we got the coach up to Acapulco
which is a really cool town - but expensive (for Mexico!) We ate at the Hard Rock Cafe wich was good and went on a sunset cruise around the bay - FREE bar - TEQUILLA!!!!!!

We saw the cliff divers which were amazing - the gorge was really narrow.

We are now in Taxco which is a silver mining town in the mountains.

Mexico City tomorrow for a week probably.

Saturday 27th January 2001

Vic and I are doing well, only a little bit sun burnt!

We went to Chichen Itza ruins - amazing place! Huge temple that we climbed up and went inside, I felt like Indiana Jones! Really cool!

We´re on the mainland now, in a town called Merida. Very pretty, lots of colonial style buildings. Staying in a really nice hotel for $20 so that´s not bad.
We´re off to Celestun tomorrow to see the mangroves and flamingos
and then to the jungle in Palenque for more Mayan ruins and some waterfalls!
Sunday 14th January, 2001

Well we have just come back from the last of our warm up trips! The Alps were great, we had quite a lot of snow whilst we were there, which improved conditions a lot. I learnt to snowboard and Vic improved her SnowBlading. We went with 8 other friends and the holiday was a great laugh, with even better boarding.

We are getting ready to start the big one on Thursday 18th Jan, so I will keep you updated. This page may not get updated until the beginning of Feb., but please keep coming back to see what we're up to.
